The seven great dunmer houses.
In modern times there are 5 great houses:
Only 3 of these houses have interest in Vvandenfell. The 3 great houses color themselves by their traditional colors: Red for Redoran, yellow for Hlaalu, brown for Telvanni. Thus members of the house Hlaalu are collectively known as Yellows.
They derive from ancient dunmer clan and tribes. But now function as political parties.
An outlander can choose a great house to become a hireling. After faithful service may seem adoption. This requires finding a high ranking sponsor.
Later were influenced by the imperial from western cultures.
The great house culture is only one of the native Dunmer cultures to morrowind. The other native culture, the Ashlander culture is a nomadic barbaric culture largely untouched by imperial influences.
